Commentary :: Civil & Human Rights : Latin America : Protest Activity
Translation: I Speak Your Name, Freedom Current rating: 0

This is a translation of a Chilean protest song, Yo Te Nombro Libertad, written for friends and families of those who "disappeared" during the Pinochet regime. This version was sung by Puerto Rican vedette Iris Chacon in the late 70's/early 80's. The song is universal and timeless, touching on themes that are still relevant today. I have to give Iris Chacon a lot of credit for singing this song in Puerto Rico, a US territory. She sang it in more innocent times. If she sang it today, she'd be labeled "unpatriotic" or a "terrorist." The Spanish version is first; the English translation follows.

YO TE NOMBRO LIBERTAD (Gian Franco Pagliaro)

Por el pájaro enjaulado,
por el pez en la pecera,
por mi amigo que está preso,
porque ha dicho lo que piensa.

Por la flores arrancadas,
por la hierba pisoteada,
por los árboles podados,
por los cuerpos que torturan:

YO TE NOMBRO, YO TE NOMBRO, LIBERTAD.

Por los dientes apretados,
por la bronca contenida,
por el nudo en la garganta,
por las bocas que no cantan.

Por el beso clandestino,
por el verso censurado,
por los fuegos apagados,
por los hombres que prohiben:

YO TE NOMBRO, LIBERTAD,

I SPEAK YOUR NAME, FREEDOM (Gian Franco Pagliaro)

For the caged bird,
for the fish in the tank,
for my friend who is imprisoned
because he said what he thinks.

For the uprooted flowers,
for the crushed grass,
for the cut trees,
for the tortured bodies:

I SPEAK YOUR NAME, I SPEAK YOUR NAME, FREEDOM.

For the clenched teeth,
for the constrained anger,
for the knot in the throat,
for the mouths that don't sing.

For the clandestine kiss,
for the censored verse,
for the extinguished fires,
for those who are oppressed:

I SPEAK YOUR NAME, FREEDOM.

I speak your name in everyone's name, your true name.
I speak your name, and when it gets dark and no one can see me:

I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS.
I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS.

Your name and other names,
your name and other names
that I can't speak aloud out of fear.

For the invaded lands,
for the conquered peoples,
for the subdued people,
for the exploited people.

For the persecuted idea,
for the blows received,
for those who don't resist,
for those who hide.

I SPEAK YOUR NAME, FREEDOM.

For the fear they have of you,
for the steps that turn,
for the boots that crush you,
for the children that kill you.

For the bodies on the bonfire,
for the innocent who are executed,
for our people who are ambushed,
for the assassinated hero:

I SPEAK YOUR NAME, FREEDOM.

I speak your name in everyone's name, your true name.
I speak your name, and when it gets dark and no one can see me:

I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS.
I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS.

Your true name,
your true name,
which is FREEDOM.

I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS.
I WRITE YOUR NAME ON MY CITY'S WALLS...
