The News-Gazette really handles scandals gracefully when politicians they've supported get involved.
The latest developments in the Dean Bauer licenses-for-bribes corruption trial, which could eventually reach into the Governor's office, were buried on page 3 of the B section in Friday's paper.
The latest big fish confirmed to be involved in the trial is erstwhile state senate president Pate Philip, who was named as the mysterious "high-ranking public official A" named as a witness in the federal corruption indictment of Bauer, who was both a close associate of Gov. George Ryan and one of his chief political fundraisers. Senator Philip had previously denied that he was "A", perhaps hoping that enough of this story would get buried on page 3's of B sections all over the state to avoid him being identified.
In the corrupt and incestous world of Illinois politics, the federal judge assigned to the case is a close friend of Sen. Philips, delaying the trial yet again until sometime in January. The Governor's spokesman declared "we have nothing to do with it, so we have no comment." |
