In California, consumers are refusing to patronize businesses in Berkeley following a city council vote to "bring the bombing of Afghanistan to a conclusion as soon as possible." |
The BBC is reporting today that consumers are refusing to patronize businesses in Berkeley following a city council vote to "bring the bombing of Afghanistan to a conclusion as soon as possible."
Berkeley mayor Shirley Dean is distancing herself from the 5-4 city council resolution as she drowns in a deluge of emails, letters and phone calls condemning Berkeley's anti-war stance.
Is the BBC correct to call this a boycott? If so, the underlying message of the boycotters is clear: businesses in Berkeley should had better keep the city council under control, or they will be punished economically.
In a way this is a microcosm of the U.S. political climate. Our economy, not our "freedom", has been attacked, and it is our economy that we expect our leaders to protect. Political dissent profoundly threatens this underlying goal, and the response is not debate but economic action. |

That's funny, I'm a California consumer, and I'm not punishing anybody. (Still won't buy Pictsweet or from Taco Hell or Borders, though.) |
