ISU Peace and Justice Coalition is holding a 48-hour refugee camp and fast on the quad at Illinois State University. Tonight there will be druming for peace and a candlelight vigil starting at 7:00pm. Closing ceremony will be at 12:00pm Wednesday. |
We, members of the Peace & Justice Coalition, believe that any search for justice relating to the tragedy of September 11th is a difficult, complicated, and less than perfect search. There is no perfect solution waiting to be found. Any justice that is had will likely be lacking in satisfaction for those affected most by the horrendous acts of September 11th.
With these thoughts in mind, we can only put forth a view that takes into consideration the previous and continued loss of innocent life and that broadens the current search for justice. To these ends, we stand firm in calling for an end to the current bombing in Afghanistan. Our reasons for this are many, but mostly they concern the bombing of civilian targets and the worsening situation facing hungry Afghan people. As almost all food shipments from International food agencies have come to a halt, estimates suggest that 7.5 million Afghan people are on the verge of mass starvation. Rather than the current military action, we ask that the U.S. government continue to pursue justice through alternative means. Whether this entails working through the United Nations many established channels or treat this solely as a criminal case, we understand that each option contains difficulties and possible negative consequences.
However, the effects and implications of the current response cannot be overlooked. How can the human lives that were so abruptly taken on September 11th be honored if further human lives are taken as a result of bombs being dropped and mass starvation. Other options need to be pursued if we are to gain any justice for the victims of September 11th. The Peace & Justice Coalition joins many voices across the world in the call for justice to be had while respecting all human life. |
