Higher Education Faculty Unite! Current rating: 0
28 Oct 2001
Campus activists across the U.S. and Canada have banded together to designate October 28 to November 3rd 2001 as Campus Equity Week, a week of action to highlight a 40 year degradation of higher education.
Campus Equity Week Coming Soon to a Campus Near You

Faculty activists and other campus activists across the US and Canada have banded together to designate October 28 to November 3rd 2001 as Campus Equity Week. The Campus Equity Week coalition marks the first time faculty from all of the major faculty unions and associations from the US and Canada, supported by their other campus union and student allies, have joined forces for an international campaign to promote faculty activism.

Campus Equity Week, designed to educate the academic community, the public, and policymakers, will focus attention on issues of fairness and quality of education. Our message: "teachers’ working conditions are students’ learning conditions" and "equal work deserves equal pay."

The week’s activities seeks to emphasize the effects of the growing use of part-time, temporary, and other forms of contingent labor in colleges and universities. Increasing contingency is one consequence of a corporate management style now commonly employed by higher education administrations. This "corporatization" of our colleges and universities causes negative impacts on the educational experience of students as well as the on the working conditions for faculty and other campus employees.

Writing for an-online magazine Writers Chronicle, Jennifer Berkshire captured the activist’s motives when she wrote, "By shining a spotlight on a higher education system that they maintain cheats teachers and students alike, a growing movement of faculty activists believes that they can turn the tide."

Plans across North America are shaping up quickly. A new documentary film, "A Simple Matter of Justice: Continent Faculty Organize," will also debut that week.

Contact any of the local campus leaders below for a sampling of Campus Equity Week events across the country. The Campus Equity Week Website, <www.cewaction.org>, is constantly being updated with new college plans and local contacts.
