Despite Sept. 11 Terror Attack, Protest Against U.S. Army's School of the Americas Will Proceed in November
Interview by Between the Lines Melinda Tuhus.
For ten years, Americans have gathered each November in ever-greater numbers outside the gates of Fort Benning, Ga. to call for the closing of the U.S. Army's School of the Americas located there. The school, dubbed by its opponents as the "School of Assassins," has provided training to thousands of military officers from all over Latin America, many of whom have returned home to terrorize their own citizens. In an effort to mute opposition, Congress recently changed the school's name to the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation."
Following the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington, School of the Americas Watch -- the organization working to close the training facility -- debated whether or not to hold their annual November protest. Interview by Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with SOA Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois about the group's decision to go forward with their November demonstration, given the changed climate after Sept. 11th and the status of Congressional legislation to close the school(A RealAudio Version of this interview may be found At http://www.btlonline.org).
The School of the Americas protest at Fort Benning will take place Nov. 16-18. For more information, call (202) 234-3440 or visit the group's Web site at: www.soaw.org
