GEO Rally outside Student Union March 10, 2005

In an historical event, the Graduate Employee's Organization, along with I Resist, and the PRC collaborated in protest of the Board of Trustee's (BOT) lack of action in providing quality graduate health care and for retaining the “Chief” mascot. GEO rallied outside the Student Union while I Resist, PRC and some GEO members were inside the meeting. The BOT claimed it wanted to reach a consensus on the mascot issue but has failed to dialogue with any of the anti-“Chief” organizations.

Great video Joe, thanks.

luser--yes, we protested because we were just bored. For the sake of protest. It had nothing to do with our thousands of dollars of unreimbursed medical expenses and the giant disparity between health insurance here and at comparable academic universities like UMich, MSU, UWis-Mad, UMass, UIowa. It had nothing to do with children without health insurance. It had nothing to do with an absent Rx plan. Please, feel free to make unwarranted conjecture on our motives anytime, it helps us spoiled bored teachers with poverty level salaries understand why we stand out in the freezing wind at 8am.

luser, sorry about the angry response. If our approach isn't for you, that's cool. I just get mad when people think that we we're just out there for the hell of it. Our health insurance is inadequate, it doesn't compare to other academically comparable institutions, and our employer isn't going to just change it without someone urging them to do so, explaining why they should (which we had a speaker inside the meeting do), and putting a little bit of pressure on. I also don't believe in "protest-for-sake-of-protest-because-it-is-cool-thing-to-do," and I don't think anyone else in the GEO does either.
