UC Progressives is sponsoring a public forum tonight on war and racism, entitled “What the War in Iraq is Doing to our Multi-Racial and Multi-Ethnic Society.” The program will feature three speakers: Dr. Robert Boone, a local physician who is a veteran of the Vietnam War; David Roediger, a professor of African American studies at the U of I; and Zohreh Sullivan, a U of I English professor who was born in Iran and educated in Pakistan.
Speakers will address a range of issues related to the war – images and treatment of Muslims and Middle Eastern people, the impact of high military spending on programs for minority and poor people, and the physical and psychological damage that military and civilian casualities have experienced.
Co-Sponsors include AWARE (the Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort), Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Union of Professional Employees, 85% Coalition, School for Designing a Society, St. Jude Catholic Worker, Socialist Forum, CU Citizens for Peace and Justice, Urbana-Champaign Friends Meeting, El Centro por los Trabajadores, Channing Murray Foundation, & Student Peace Action |

I will be attending for sure. Any chance in future such event listings, there is some statement on how the speakers were chosen. I know two people in Chambana who would be good in such a series. |
