PRC Rally Against the "Chief"
Wednesday, March 9th
12-1pm
South Patio of the UIUC Student Union |
"Chief Illiniwek" perpetuates a racist stereotype of Native peoples, yet this serious issue does not seem to have much of an effect on the U of I Board of Trustees. The Board's most recent action was devising a "Consensus Conclusion" that is very vague and has not involved or communicated with any one of the anti-"Chief" groups in this community as well as on our Campus.
Because of the lack of action from the Board of Trustee (BOT), the Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative (PRC) will be holding an anti-"Chief" rally urging the removal of the "Chief" as a mascot and symbol of the University of Illinois. The rally will be held at the South Patio of the Union on Wednesday March 9th, 2005, from 12:00p.m. to 1pm.
Throughout the rally, you can let the Board know how you feel about this issue by leaving them messages on the "Remove The Chief" banner that will be displayed from 12:00p.m. to 3:00 pm. We will be exhibiting an updated "Wall of Shame" during this time as well.
The U of I Board of Trustees will be meeting on Thursday, March 10 at 8:30 a.m. at the UIUC Student Union. In order to lend your support and solidarity to this very important issue, come out to the rally on Wednesday, and make your presence known at the BOT meeting on Thursday.
Also, The GEO will be hosting a rally at 8 AM the following day before the Board of Trustees Meeting. They are calling it the "Rally for Fair Health Care" and it would be great for you all to come out to that as well. More information will be provided at our rally the day before.
For more information email the PRC at prc (at) prairienet.org. or
call (217)352-8721.
Sincerely,
The PRC
