Anti-Missile Defense System and Anti-war Rally on Quad
A protest against a space based missile defense system drew 50 people on the University of Illinois quad Monday at noon. Speakers said that the missile system doesn’t work, that it would drain resources needed for social programs and is bad foreign policy. Tests of the missile system used targets which are much easier to hit than a real missile. Decoys could easily disrupt the system and the system doesn’t protect against missiles from ships near a harbor, or from submarines, or from truck bombs or small airplanes. Building a missile defense system would violate the ABM treaty, which limits production and distribution of ballistic missiles. If the U.S. would build a missile defense system, Russia and China would respond by building more missiles capable of hitting the United States. The missile defense system would require indefinite amounts of money, which would drain resources from health care, housing, food, and education. Overall the system would make everyone less safe.
The last part of the rally focused on Afganistan. The United States should stop bombing Afganistan because it doesn’t have enough evidence against Bin Laden, it violates United Nation’s charter and International law, and it kills innocent civilians. The economic and political injustices caused by the United States must be addressed, especially in the middle east. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, Iraq and the United States must be resolved in order to act upon the underlying problems.. The United Nations has specified appropriate for resolving these conflicts. If the United States does not abide by international law, the cycle of violence will continue. |
