NPR News does favor for Disney & Coke while NPR President defends news intregity Current rating: 0
28 Feb 2001
Commentary regarding critizism of National Public Radio News becomming too corporate friendly. NPR's president defended their news department on WILL's focus 580 yet on the very next NPR newscast there was a story on Micky's Extreme, a new Disney and Coke product
David Inge, host of WILL's Focus 580 talk radio program had Kevin Klose the president of National Public Radio (NPR) as a guest today. Many progressives took this opportunity to ask him about someting they've been sensing for some time. This is that NPR News has been moving away from it's progressive public roots, and becomming more corporate underwriter friendly. They were concerned of reporter self-censorship. That is, not taking on or spinning stories so that they do not offend the corporate sponcers. Mr. Klose assured us that they do not shy away from any story and are indeed looking into corporate globolization stories to run in the near future.

And what hard-hitting reporter-independent critical-corporate story ran on NPR News following this interview?... NEWFLASH- Micky's Extreme! comes to stores near you. That's right an NPR News story, not an ad or sponser underwriting, on how Coke and Disney have come together to provide this wonderful product for you and me.

When NPR News gives Disney and Coke free advertising for thier products and pretends its news while the NPR president assures us that they are the independent news of the public, we are in a sorry state.

Any comment on Kuwait or LPFM?

Did anyone ask about the recent underwriting deal with the State of Kuwait? What about NPR's opposition to low-power FM?
Questions about LPFM and Kuwait underwriting
Current rating: 0
01 Mar 2001
Several callers inquired about the gov't of Kuwait's underwriting and about underwriting in general.

I was in the studio audience and asked a question about NPR and Klose's opposition to low-power FM. Klose honed in on my question and gave a rambling, but interesting answer.

After the program there was a small reception and Klose pursued me, calling out "Hey, low-power FM guy!" and we talked for about 10 or 15 minutes.

I'm working on a write-up about it where I'll give better details. I post some here and the rest on my web site linked above.
