Major Owens was one of 16 Congressional Democrats who recently sent a letter to Pres. Bush urging an immeidate withdrawl of U.S. troops from Iraq. Owens surveys the damage the war is doing to Iraq and the domestic agenda and criticizes the
Democratic Party leadership for their timidity on this and other issues.

At a time when the mainstream labor movement was still in support of the war in Vietnam, a number of trade union leaders were urging a break with the Johnson administration over the war in the same way that Dr. King had done earlier that year.Here Dr. King congratulates the unions in attendance and focuses on the effect of the war on the psychology of the nation and the domestic agenda -especially the war
on poverty.
