Parent and Student Advocacy Project
Organizational Meeting
Tuesday, Feb. 1, 1 PM
Douglass Branch Library Conference Room |
The Champaign Urbana Area Project (CUAP), a community organizing group dedicated to offering constructive alternatives to juvenile delinquency, is facillitating the formation of a community action committee to help students who feel they are being discriminated against in school, whether due to race, disability, income level, or other status. Whether it is related to receiving appropriate special education services or to work against discriminatory application of discipline in the schools, the CUAP Parent and Student Advocacy Project will work to ensure that children receive the free appropriate public education that is their right.
The organizing meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 1 at 1 P.M. in the conference room of the Douglass Branch of the Champaign Public Library. Anyone interested in participating in the project is welcome. Parents of children with disabilities or those who feel their children have been discriminated against are particularly encouraged to attend.
What will make this project unique is that those advocating for the rights of parents and their children will be parents themselves, many of whom have already personally faced the same issues. These parents will have the opportunity to receive advocacy training, and future meetings may include training workshops, panel discussions, or speakers on particular topics of interest. We aim to preserve and build upon the knowledge and experience that participants in the project have acquired on their own and, ultimately, to build a self-sustaining community of parents and community members who are knowledgeable about their rights and the educational rights of their children.
If you, or parents or community members that you know, might be interested in serving on this committee and improving the education of our community’s children, please contact Stuart at CUAP at 373-2827 or attend the organizational meeting.
