?Three Jail Suicides in Champaign County. Enough is Enough.?
Terrell Layfield killed himself at the Champaign County jail on Saturday, Decembe r4th. This was the third suicide that has taken place within the walls of the Champaign County Jail in the last 6 months -- this compared to an overall state count of approximately 8 or 9 suicides per year - in total ? in all city and county jails in Illinois. In other words if statistics for this year hold true. Champaign County will have had 30% of all jail suicides in Illinois. The ?outside agency? assigned to investigate is Champaign County?s own Urbana
?The Heavy Hand of Champaign County Jail?
One of the main solutions that the Sheriff is offering in response to the suicides is to ask family members and inmates to monitor the mental health of the inmates. To understand how ludicrous this is, citizens must understand the conditions at the Champaign County jail, including the hampering of reasonable visits. |
