“The Clairnotes are members of AFSCME Local 3700 and they will be singing songs to the University Administration that may sound familiar in melody but the message will be entirely different. We will continue to protest the University of Illinois attempt to lower the standard of living for our members until they decide it simply isn’t worth the effort. No matter how long or how many protest it takes, we will continue to remind the administration that this University Works _Because_ We do. |
Dorinda Miller, President of AFSCME Local 3700 at the University of Illinois, announced today that the “Clairnotes” of Local 3700 will serenade students and visitors at the Illini Union during the lunch hour on Tuesday December 7, 2004.
Miller said, “The Clairnotes are members of AFSCME Local 3700 and they will be singing songs to the University Administration that may sound familiar in melody but the message will be entirely different.” Miller went on to say that, “We will continue to protest the University of Illinois attempt to lower the standard of living for our members until they decide it simply isn’t worth the effort. No matter how long or how many protest it takes, we will continue to remind the administration that this University Works Because We do.”
Jerry Wright, Staff Representative with AFSCME Council 31 said, "It is a shame we have to take such actions against the University of Illinois during the Holiday Season. What they, the University of Illinois, are proposing to do to our members will not only take the joy out of this holiday season it will take the joy out of every holiday season for the next several years. Our members work hard for this University and they earn every dollar they work for, we know that and so does the University of Illinois. AFSCME will not be a part of lowering the standard of living for our members without a fight.” Wright concluded his comments by saying, “This is just one of the many ways we intend to make our voice heard at the University of Illinois and we will continue until the University of Illinois changes its mind“
The announcement, through a press release, said that the Clairnotes would begin their serenade at the South Entrance to the Illini Union and would proceed to the first floor and lower level dining areas. |
