On September 16, 2001, the webmaster of "The Flag-Burning Page" (TFBP) took down his site due to threats and harassment from people who can't stand to have anyone disagree with them.
TFBP did not advocate the burning of flags; rather, it offered information and arguments in opposition to the proposed Flag Protection Amendment to the United States Constitution. The amendment would allow Congress to impose criminal penalties on anyone who burns or otherwise "desecrates" a U.S. Flag.
In other words, TFBP stood for freedom. Freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of political dissent. And for that, its webmaster was repeatedly threatened with death.
Some of us have decided to show the freedom-haters that they can't silence views they disagree with. We're mirroring all of the content of The Flag-Burning Page. All references to the webmaster's full name and email address have been changed, so that he won't have to put up with any more abuse. If you are interested in putting up your own mirror, please email obeah87 (at) yahoo.com.
Please support the ideals for which the U.S. Flag is supposed to stand, by supporting the freedom to dissent. It doesn't matter whether you would ever condone flag-burning itself; most people don't. What's important is that you recognize that even the most unpopular forms of expression must be protected in a democracy. |
