The 34th annual Peace Bazaar will be held Dec. 4th in Champaign, IL, to raise funds for peace- related groups. |
The Peace Bazaar is an annual alternative gift fair, now in its 34th year, where we sell gifts (new and recycled), UNICEF cards and calendars, household items, toys, crafts, books, plants, fresh-baked goods, art by local artists, gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses, and much more. Funds raised from the event go to groups promoting peace and social justice (see below).
This year’s Peace Bazaar will be held Saturday December 4th at Community United Church of Christ at 805 S. 6th St. (at the corner of 6th and Daniel) in Champaign, IL. Everyone is invited to participate.
Proceeds from the 2004 Peace Bazaar will benefit ten organizations. Local recipients include Community Day Care, El Centro por Los Trabajadores, Frances Nelson Healthcare Center, St. Jude Catholic Worker House, and Champaign County Victim Offender Reconciliation Project (VORP). National and International recipients include African Great Lakes Initiative, Calavera Project (El Salvador) of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Champaign, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Oxfam America (specifically for Sudan and Chad), and Project Lakota (Pine Ridge Reservation, S. Dakota).
Each year, 93% to 95% of all funds raised go directly to recipients with just 5% to 7% of funds used to pay expenses. Last year in 2003, the Peace Bazaar raised $3720 and donated $465 to each of eight groups supporting peace and social justice.
Everyone is invited to come shopping on Saturday, December 4th. We have some spectacular deals and treasures just waiting to be found. The Peace Bazaar is being held at Community United Church of Christ at 6th and Daniel in Champaign on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community United is the yellow brick church across 6th Street from Espresso Royale. Free parking is available in the parking garages north of the church on John Street and west of the church on 5th Street.
This year the Peace Bazaar will be joined by several alternative gift vendors including Ten Thousand Villages, Heartland Pathways (David Monk’s prairie photographs), El Centro por Los Trabajadores, Heifer Project International, and A.W.A.R.E., the Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort.
Organizers are seeking donations of used items which are still in good shape and suitable for gifts or use in the home. Some of the things we are looking for (and will be selling) include gifts of all sorts, artwork by local artists, pottery, ceramics, dishes, cookware, pasta makers, bread makers and other small kitchen appliances, hand-made crafts, antiques, house plants, decorative items, toys, sports equipment, musical instruments, multicultural art, handspun and woven scarves, hats, and wraps, sweaters suitable for giving as gifts, children’s books, cook books, coffee table books, gardening books, recently published fiction, furniture, microwaves, televisions, and a few pieces of furniture. Please call 369-2853 first about donations of furniture, microwaves, televisions or other large items. Please do NOT donate used clothing, used computers, toy guns or toy soldiers.
Donations may be taken to 412 W Oregon St in Urbana anytime between now and Dec 3rd. Items may also be taken to Community United Church of Christ between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. during the evenings of Dec 1 - 3. If you have questions concerning suitability of items, please call Joan at 369-2853. or e-mail jnelshoppen (at) insightbb.com.
Volunteers are always welcome and are what makes this event happen. Two hours of your time can make a big difference. Call Joan at 369-2853 or Claire at 356-6710 or e-mail jnelshoppen (at) insightbb.com for more information.
