Stop shopping! |
The recent attacks on the WTC and Pentagon have thrown the United States economy into a full blown recession. Airline companies have cut tens of thousands of jobs as only defense stocks seem to show any promise; the stock market recently recorded its worst week since the Great Depression. Naturally, George W. Bush and his Washington cronies have responded by lubricating the machinery of the military-industrial complex while encouraging Americans to go back to work and to resume shopping.
Now more than ever, we see that the American consumer controls the fate of American capitalism. Indeed, Americans have come to rely on consumerism as a form of false-sustainence; hence, the American consumer might not be prepared for a drastic change in lifestyle that a wave of anti-consumerism would bring. But if those conscious of the agenda of the capitalists, and the reliance they place on drones to buy their products decide to drop out, we could see the beginning of the collapse of the empire's infrastructure.
Right now, those committed to a just existence should begin to create systems of sustainence that fall outside of the tentacles of capitalism. Autonomous zones, alternative methods of food distribution, cooperative living, and the cultivation of an oppositional, but independent form of culture could, if employed correctly, be contagious enough to create a viable opportunity for revolution.
At the same time, our visibility in our opposition to war and capitalism must remain prevalent, be it by literature, pamphlets, flyers, and street graffiti, or outreach education and living by example.
Now is the time to stop consuming the American lie and start presenting an alternative in which tragedies like the one that occurred on September 11th will have no pretext for execution.
This is not intended to be a rally cry against Americans; this is a plea for Americans and people all over the world to actively create a world in which freedom and joy actually exist beyond the rhetoric of pre-written speeches and historic documents.
