Performance-oriented activism against the War Machine hits downtown Urbana. |
Nearly every day this week, downtown Urbana has seen a small but determined action by a group calling itself "Ladies Agaist War." They stand on the steps of the downtown Post Office, just north of Lincoln Square, illiciting reactions and conversations from passers-by on the subject of military action and the aftermath of the September 11th disasters--and they do so in as "ladylike" a manner as possible: No shouting, no chanting, no crowds blocking the streets, just a neighborly chat with fellow citizens on the subject of peace and justice in the aftermath of the disasters of September 11th.
This Sunday around noon, a group of five women from Ladies Against War were seen smiling and waving for peace on the corner of Race and Main in Urbana. They displayed placards reading: "Wave a Flag/Write a letter/Tell your Reps/that Peace is better!" and banners stating simply "NO WAR!"
Reactions from automobile and pedestrian traffic at the intersection varied from the thumbs-up of support to harassing horn-honks and shouting. Friendly responses or not, the Ladies Against War seem determined to keep smiling and waving for peace--in opposition of the Jingoist, macho war drumbeat so prevalent in every mainstream media source.
