This advisory was originally from Wisconsin. People working with immigrant communities may want to pass this information on to others. |
New Restrictions and Regulations on Immigrants Right to Travel
Subject: Regulations and Restrictions on Immigrants mobility (Undocumented persons andNonimmigrant) (fwd)
FYI, please share this information with co-workers, other agencies and immigrant communities in the state Thank you.
In light of the recent events, the US gov't and especially the INS are trying to push forth regulations that may restrict many immigrants, undocumented persons and nonimmigrants' mobility. Please pass this info to others on your email list as well. It's important that people who may be effected by these current regulations be on notice.
1) "Airlines are turning over to INS people they suspect are undocumented. Please warn anyone you encounter who may be undocumented that it is extremely risky to travel inside or outside the U.S. in any way that requires showing documentation. INS has instituted new, extremely severe, detention rules (see below). These don't necessarily apply only to Arabs, and seem to vary from office to office.
2) Some INS offices are detaining Arab noncitizens they encounter, including those going in for interviews to obtain green cards, etc. When INS does this, it may refuse to allow the immigrant to speak to her attorney or to use the phone, and may say it plans to detain her indefinitely. The Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee is monitoring these detentions; if you have concerns about Arab clients, please contact them at (202) 244-2990 or E-mail: legal (at) adc.org."
