In this week's independent news we hear from sara sloan of the International ANSWER in Washington DC, Also Stephanie Ernst shares her thoughts in the aftermath of election 2004 for this weeks edition of citizen speak. There will also be another edition Soundbite produced by Laura Bynum.
Taser International has received U.S. approval for its product's use on some commercial airlines. In illinois, Earlier this year the Champaign Police department withdrew their request for tasers following massive demonstrations at city council meetings. The president of Taser said that this was the first approval of its kind. After wall-street received word of the go ahead given by the us government, taser shares rose 4.3%.
A 23 year old man died in france as he protested chained to railroad tracks. Sebastian was run over by a train holding 175 metric tons of atomic waste in transit from germany to a permanent storage facility in france. The facility was created in 1977 and nuclear material began it's transit on CASTOR transport in 1995. 10s of thousands of people have protested CASTOR over the years and it has amounted to some of the most costly demonstrations in german history.
The US Dollar has fallen to record lows against the Euro as the price of oil futures decline. This happens amid a surge in oil output by OPEC, the exporting agency in control of shipping about half the worlds oil. Analysts are predicting rises as winter approaches expecting output to scale back.
Allawi has declared 60 days of emergency rule in Iraq leading up to the elections in January. The United Nations is currently working in the region to assure fair elections. The UN undersecretary for political affairs voiced concerns about the groups in the region that are less likely to participate, weather they have been alienated and what can be done to create a more inclusive election.
President George W. Bush asserts that he will continue his assault on same-sex marriages. 11 states have passed ballot measures to ban gay marriages last week. In this weeks Citizen speak Champaign Resident Staphanie Ernst shares her thoughts the day after the election.
