The IMF and World Bank call off their annual summit in DC. Organizations planning protests against the summit, decided this weekend to limit their activities to educational events. |
On Friday, September 14, The IMF and World Bank postponed their annual meetings later this month because of security concerns following the Tuesday’s attacks against the Pentagon and World Trade Center. The meetings were set for Sept. 29-30. It is not certain when or if they will be rescheduled.
Similarly, the protests scheduled to coincide with the IMF and World bank meetings, which may have drawn 100,000 people to D.C., are altering their plans.
On Friday, The AFL-CIO, Friends of the Earth, and Oxfam America all announced that they were pulling out of the planned demonstrations.
On Saturday night, at the spokescouncil meeting for the The Mobilization For Global Justice, the main organizing group for upcoming protests against the IMF and World Bank, decided to cancel its demonstrations in the wake of the tragic events of the past week. The group plans to continue with non-street educational events to support the peace movement through the Washington Peace Center and the American Friends Service Commmittee.
Educational events which *will* be held include: A Teach-in entitled "Global Apartheid: A Teach-In for Action on the IMF and World Bank" which will run Sept. 27-29. The Mobilization for Global Justice will proceed with its plans for a Peoples' Summit, to be held from Sept. 26 - Sept. 29. The Religious Working Group on the World Bank and IMF and the Jubilee USA Network are proceeding with plans for an interfaith service and vigil on the evening of Saturday, September 29, 2001. |

I hate to say it, but I'm not surprised. AFL-CIA at work (why do I use this term? See the history of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the National Endowment for Democracy, examples of CIA/AFL-CIO collaboration).
If there was a time to continue militant, anti-globalization protests, it's now. After all, those big capitalists are the ones responsible for this! |
