RĂ©seau d'Alerte et d'Intervention pour les Droits de l'Homme

Call for demonstration: “A walk for Abolition”

Saturday, October 9th, 12.30 p.m. at the “Place des Arts”- Montreal

We, abolitionists, Quebecois, Canadians, French, Americans, citizens from all over the world and human rights activists, call for a general mobilization to say NO TO THE DEATH PENALTY!

Come next Saturday October 9th, at 12.30 p.m., rue Ste Catherine and Place des Arts, and join the WALK FOR ABOLITION. This demonstration, which will include the participation of Catherine Deneuve, Binca Jagger and Quebec artists, will mark the end of the 2nd World Congress against the Death penalty.

We invite all organizations, networks, individuals, and abolitionists from all over the world:

- To call for the end of all death sentences in the world

- To demand the universal abolition of the death penalty

Capital punishment is still in effect right south of Canada’s borders. Four days after the demonstration, the US Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of the death penalty for juvenile offenders.

Together, in the streets of Montreal, we will cry out a categorical NO to the death penalty in the United States as in all other non-abolitionist countries. NO to “an eye for an eye”, NO to political persecution, No to judicial mistakes NO to physical and psychological torture/, No to racial and social discrimination, NO to the violations of the rights of defense,

We call on musicians, in the name of human rights, to come with whistles, djembes, batucadas or any other musical instruments and help us, along with other artists and activists from all cultures, carry the call for abolition across all borders.

We invite you all to dress in black from head to toe. The demonstration will end with a die-in where we will all lie on the ground in memory of executed inmates (don’t forget your black plastic bags!). The entire world will witness this symbolic image!

The meeting point is at 12.30 p.m. Place des Arts, and the peaceful walk will end at the place Émilie-Gamelin, where personalities from the 2nd World Congress against the Death Penalty will give keynote addresses.

Capital punishment is a state-sanctioned crime committed in the name of justice, IN OUR NAMES!

From Beijing to Teheran, from New Delhi to Baghdad, from Riyadh to Washington: Abolition now!

Let’s walk for Abolition!
At 10:00 AM, before the walk, take part, at the Complexe Desjardins, in a teach-in led by American Law Professor, Speedy Rice: « How can lawyers and students help in the defense of a death-row inmate ? »

First signatories of the Walk for Abolition:

Amnesty International, CSN, CSQ, ECPM, FTQ, La Ligue des droits et des libertés, PRI, RAIDH
