I was Blind Now I See
Helen Neville, Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia presented her research on Color-Blind Racial Ideology in Multiracial Contexts at the Univesity of Illinois.
Color Bind Racial Ideology is used to justify racial hierarchy and accepts that every one is the same. If everyone is the same then there are no racial (white) priveledges, no preferential or discriminatory treatment in the judicial or education system, and everyone has equal access to good jobs.
The COBRAS study she worked on measured to what degree do white people deny their priveledge, deny institutionalized racism and deny the existance of racial issues.
Another COBRAS study measured the correlation between denying racism and being prejudiced towards people of color. The more you deny racism, the more likely it is that you think you live in a just world. The more you think you live in a just world, the more prejudiced you will be against people of color and women.
She also presented information on false consciousness. Why do people who live in a racial hierarchy say they don't? Some fail to perceive the injustices they suffer, others blame themselves for the problem, some justify their social role, and others identify with the oppressor. |
