On the evening following World Trade Center attacks, a local Muslim congregation opens its doors to non-Muslim neighbors and braces itself for what's to come. |
(11 Sept.) Members of Champaign-Urbana's Islamic community met at the Mosque and Community center on North Lincoln Avenue in Urbana this evening. In the aftermath of the hijacked suicide crashes at the World Trade Center and Pentagon, a prayer gathering was followed by a presentation by two Muslim student leaders from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The two speakers advised fellow Muslim students to be cautious as they walk around campus, to travel in groups of twos and threes especially after dark, to contact the Mosque and community supporters for rides home, to study in the campus libraries only if absolutely necessary, and to dial 9-1-1 without hesitation if they feel threatened by verbal or physical abuse.
Rumors and reports of bomb threats already received at the Mosque and Community Center building could not be confirmed. |
