There has been little news about the damage to the Pentagon. The New York Times is reporting that the airliner that impacted the building crashed completely through the five rings of the building and into the center courtyard. NPR reports that the segment of the building hit happened to be under renovation, which may somewhat reduce the casualties. The Pentagon Situation Room apparently had to be evacuated when it filled with smoke.
Military forces are apparently on a high state of alert. Fully armed Air Force fighter planes were scrambled over Washington, DC to fly Combat Air Patrol and it was reported that the same occurred in New York, where any violators of the "no-fly zone" were subject to being shot down. Military units, including the National Guard, were being activated to both supplement overwhelmed civilian agencies and to likely provide increased security at all federal installations. National Command Authority systems are fully mobilized and radio traffic is a high levels. Radio monitors have been ordered by e-mail listowners not to post any traffic regarding the extensive military movements they are monitoring. |
