Several hours ago, 2pm EST, the Division of Forestry and Vinton County police arrested two activists involved in the Zaleski State Forest tree -sit. |
At approximately 1pm today two activist in the tree sit came down and were arrested by Vinton County police. Police and prosecutors showed up earlier this morning and gave people the following choice: come down now from the sit and you will be charged with criminal trespassing, the people on the ground will be able to walk out freely without arrest. If you don't, we have the equipment ready to punch a new 3 mile road through the forest and around back to the logging road. The people in the sit felt that rather than have 3 more miles of forest destroyed, they would come down, having achieved a huge victory in the week of occupation.
Tremendous media has been generated, and an immense amount of pressure placed on the governor, the division of forestry, and the division of natural resources. The public is now looking very closely at the DOF practices, putting them into a very uncomfortable position of high public scrutiny. The Buckeye Forest Council and Hock-Hocking EF! feel that, although the occupation has ended, the action was a complete success and is a strong step towards ending all logging on public lands in Ohio. This is one step, the first step, in a long battle that is being waged against big timber and corporate tainted governments. NO COMPROMISE IN DEFENSE OF MOTHER EARTH
