Former Peace Corps Volunteers and friends from around the world come to Chicago from Aug. 5-8 as the National Peace Corps Association and the Chicago Area Returned Peace Corps Association co-celebrate their 25-year legacy of action for a more peaceful world. The former volunteer governors of two neighboring states, nationally recognized journalists and policy-makers and leaders from two Peace Corps countries will join the NPCA to explore how its members have improved their home communities as well as the places in which they served. (You need not be a former Peace Corps Volunteer to attend the conference. )
Special guests and speakers include:
Chris Matthews, MSNBC Hardball Anchor (RPCV Swaziland)
Chicago Tribune’s own Steve Franklin will retrace the route from his Peace Corps service in Turkey to his work as a foreign correspondent covering Afghanistan and Iraq.
Pete Yarrow of “Peter, Paul and Mary,” a longtime fan of the Peace Corps, will be on hand to lead the celebration and to talk about how Peace Corps has influenced his organization, Operation Respect, which teaches children how to value each other.
The Vice President of Afghanistan Hedayat Amin-Arsala and his wife, Betsy (RPCV Afghanistan), will talk about the lingering effects of Peace Corps pre-war work in a country emerging from decades of civil war.
Former Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan, taught by Peace Corps volunteers, represents a country with one of the longest-running relationships with the U.S. national service organization.
Ohio Governor Bob Taft (RPCV Tanzania) will speak about how his Peace Corps service naturally evolved from a family whose public servants included a U.S. President, Supreme Court Chief Justice and two senators. Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and his wife, Jessica, bring their service in Tunisia to the leadership of a state that has had strong ties to the Peace Corps since its beginning 43 years ago.
In its 25 years as the organization representing former volunteers and staff, who now number over 200,000, the NPCA has become a leader in teaching Americans about other countries and cultures. Its 154 affiliate groups such as the Chicago Area Peace Corps Association, support public service projects in their home communities and in countries across the world.
The conference will feature forums on Understanding Islam, Fair Trade, Microenterprise in Developing Nations, Environmental Activism, and how former volunteers are tackling the major health crises of our day. |
