"Sixty-two percent said the war was not worth the loss of American lives and other costs, a figure that has risen steadily over the past few months." |
[...] Fifty-one percent of respondents said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq, up from 46 percent in April, May and June. Forty-five percent said taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, down slightly from the past several months.
Sixty-two percent said the war was not worth the loss of American lives and other costs, a figure that has risen steadily over the past few months.
Signaling that the White House may be running into trouble in its effort to portray Mr. Bush as the surer pair of hands when it comes to national security, the poll suggested that the nation was closely split over which party would make better decisions when it comes to Iraq. Forty-five percent said the Democrats were more likely to make the right decisions about the war and 41 percent said Republicans. [...]

Wow, the CBS/NYT Poll!!! This must be true then. No liberal bias among these two organizations. I am going to reflect on my conservatism and my views on the War on Terror.
Thanks,

As a point of comparison, Gallup's numbers on similar questions are summarized at
http://www.gallup.com/content/?ci=12373
Was going to war in Iraq a mistake? 54% yes, 45% no.
Was going to war in Iraq worth it? 47% yes, 50% no.
The trends are clear in both polls, if you review the data going back to 2003. Support for the war has fallen considerably. |

It's also worth pointing out that the transfer of "power" to Iraqi representatives didn't make any significant difference in the poll results -- for example, on the question "Was it worth going to War in Iraq," the turnover of "power" moved only one percent of the public from the "not worth it" to "worth it" category.
In the meantime, of course, Osama Bin Laden is dancing the Osama Samba somewhere in the sands of Afghanistan, comforted by the redeployment of so many American troops to Iraq, secure in the opportunity it provided to regroup al-Qaida -- and it's getting clearer and clearer to the American people how they've been had by the Bush administration.
A few days after the now-infamous "Mission Accomplished" photo-op on the USS Lincoln -- which became such an intense embarrassment that the White House now distances itself from it now that it's clear just how _un_accomplished the mission is, even a year later -- some deep-thinking yahoo went around Urbana egging cars with the ubiquitous "Attack Iraq? No!" bumper stickers. I was one of the folks who got one. So I take a particular pleasure in seeing that the majority of Americans have now come around to my side.
There's a very good compendium, as an appendix of John Dean's _Worse Than Watergate_, listing just what the lies were with which Bush (and his friends at Faux News) sold the country on his unnecessary and stupid war. His war was a propaganda victory -- but only until the hard part arrived. As we knew it had to. And it will get worse before it gets better -- meaning, it will also get worse for Bush.
