Just at a glance, the CBS/NY Times poll data (gray square) seems to demonstrate the least volatility, i.e. it tracks closest and most consistently the overall moving average of all the polls. And it now indicates Bush's lowest popularity yet, at ~42%. So it sure looks like Bush's fall continues and is unlikely to turn around, barring any major flag-waving, chest-beating foreign policy October surprises, right into the November election. |

Here's a graph from the Washington Post a few weeks back calling out what the spikes were. Currently, Gallup is calling it a dead heat.

Despite the lower than average approval rating, Bush continues to lead in the National Polls and is doing quite well in the battleground states. He is within striking distance in NJ (A bastion of liberal thought) and is even close in CA.
Additionally take a gander at the overwhelming strength of the economy and I can assure that Bush/Cheney will be victorious.
How's Ralph Nader doing btw?

Gallup.com today: "Kerry/Edwards Enjoy Slight Lead -- A new CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey of likely voters shows little change in the race for the White House, with Democratic presidential candidate, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, and his running mate, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, enjoying a four-point lead over President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. With independent candidates Ralph Nader and running mate Peter Camejo included in the ballot, Kerry's lead is a point higher (five points)."
Gallup also notes that as long as they've been in existence, no incumbent with such a high negative rating at this point in the campaign has been re-elected. At the moment, he's in the same basic range Gerald Ford was in '76. That's not lower than average -- if by "average" you mean the guys who lost their re-election bids. Like Bush is clearly in the process of doing.
