The rights of the anyone but the corporation involved and the government to comment on new nuclear plants are about to be rescinded by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. With the Bush Administration's stated desire to build large numbers of new nuclear plants, you could find one sprouting up next door to you. Guess what? Not only will the governemnt not care, they won't even allow you to enter your objections into the record. ML |
Dear Friends:
This is a reminder that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's proposed rule to eliminate effective public participation in reactor licensing and license amendments procedures is coming up fast. Comment deadline is September 14, 2001. NIRS comments on the proposal will be published on our website (www.nirs.org) late Thursday, September 6. Background information on the proposal is also available there.
We urge you to submit your own comments, or base them on our lengthy version, or simply send in the following text:
To Whom It May Concern:
I am opposed to the NRC proposed rulemaking as described in The Federal Register, April 16, 2001, Vol. 66 to change the licensing hearing process for nuclear power reactors. The public is entitled to full and meaningful participation in an on-the- record hearing process for the licensing of new reactors, the relicensing of aging reactors and industry amendments to operating license safety requirements.
Send your comments to:

We still have plenty of pre-printed postcards with this message available for you to distribute to your friends and colleagues. All people have to do is write their name and address, put a stamp on it, and put it in a mailbox. If you want some of these cards, just e-mail us (nirsnet (at) nirs.org) or call 202-328-0002. We'll quickly send as many as you want at no charge.
While it is important to get as many comments in as possible before the September 14 deadline (and it is essential to gain standing for a potential lawsuit), in this case we are trying to build public opinion and opposition to the proposal. Thus, it would be fine if the NRC continues to receive thousands of postcards after the deadline! So, organize, get your comments in, help your neighbors and co-workers and PTAs and church groups get their comments in. And if you want the pre-printed postcards, please ask.
Thanks
Michael Mariotte
