ACRI: Basic human rights have deteriorated in territories this year
By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent
Basic human rights have deteriorated in the West Bank and Gaza Strip over the past year, according to an annual report by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel that was released Wednesday.
ACRI attorney Rachel Benziman cited Israel Defense Forces activity in Rafah in May - particularly "indiscriminate shooting at civilians and preventing the evacuation of wounded people" - as an egregious human rights violation.
Israeli Arabs also suffer from serious discrimination, Benziman said.
In addition, the report assessed the rights of foreign workers and the balance of power between employers and employees.
The report found that the number of illegal foreign workers deported from Israel had increased greatly in the past year and that the intensive activities of the Immigration Police and the Interior Ministry have led to severe infringement of foreign workers' rights.
The study cited several reports on violence against detainees, manhunts for foreign workers, and illegal detention of workers for more than 14 days.
The report also found that employees fear filing complaints against their employers and speaking out against infringement of their rights.
The government depicts the unemployed as lazy parasites, the report said.
