Green Party Presidential Hopeful, David Cobb, to Visit Urbana

Contact: Jennifer Walling, Prairie Greens member, jwalling (at) uiuc.edu

David Cobb, candidate for the Green Party Nomination for President, will be speaking at the University of Illinois on June 2, 2004 at 8PM in the Illini Union Ball Room A. An energetic and dynamic speaker, he will be discussing his reasons for seeking the Green Party Presidential Nomination and answering questions about his campaign. He will be joined by Ken Urban -- Green Party Candidate for County Board District 7, Zach Miller – Green Party Candidate for County Board District 9, and Scott Summers – attorney and author from Harvard, Illinois running for U.S. Senate in Illinois as a Green. The Prairie Greens of East Central Illinois, UIUC Students for David Cobb, and the UIUC Campus Greens will be hosting the event.

David Cobb, an attorney from Texas now living in California, is seeking the Green Party Nomination for President in 2004. The Green Party presidential nominee will be chosen by Green delegates at the National Green Party Convention on June 26, 2004 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. David Cobb ranked first at the Illinois Green Party Convention in February, garnering nine of Illinois's twenty-two votes.

Jennifer Walling, member of the Prairie Greens of East Central Illinois and delegate to the National Convention, said, "We are excited to bring David Cobb to speak in Urbana. There is disagreement in the Green Party about who to run or whether to run anyone at all. However, I think that David Cobb is the best possible Green Party Presidential Candidate. He will work to build local Green Parties all over the country and bring Green issues, such as opposition to the war and protection of the environment, into the presidential forum."

David Cobb served as the General Counsel for the Green Party prior to announcing his candidacy and was the Green Party candidate for attorney general in Texas in 2002. He also coordinated the Texas signature drive in 2000 to secure a ballot position for Ralph Nader, collecting 76,000 in 75 days from voters who hadn't voted in the primary.

Phil Huckelberry, Government and Elections Chair of the Illinois Green Party, said, "Illinois and Texas are two of the hardest states in the country to obtain ballot access for a third party presidential candidate. Greens in Illinois will have to collect over 25,000 signatures before June 21 to get a Green Party president, vice president, and U.S. Senate candidates on the ballot."

Zach Miller, Secretary of the Prairie Greens said, "The Prairie Greens are in the midst of their ballot access drive for Champaign county offices. I am trying to get on the ballot in Champaign County District 9. Susan Rodgers - Candidate for District 8, Ken Urban - Candidate for District 7, and I will have to collect around 300 signatures each to get on the ballot in their districts. Democrats and Republican candidates had to collect around 30 signatures for each race." The Prairie Greens expect to have enough signatures by the June 21st deadline to secure ballot positions for the November 2004 County Board Race for several County Board seats as well as a full slate of county wide positions.

Starting at 8PM on June 2, Zach Miller and Ken Urban will each speak for five to ten minutes. Scott Summers will speak for twenty minutes. David Cobb will speak for an hour followed by a question and answer period. The event is free and open to the public.

The Prairie Greens of East Central Illinois are a local chapter of the Illinois Green Party. More information on the Prairie Greens is available at www.prairiegreens.org.
