Get Involved with the IMC's Website and Technology -- IMC Web/Tech Meeting Monday, June 7, 8PM @ IMC Current rating: 0
26 May 2004
Modified: 10:04:54 PM
Interested in how this website is edited, maintained and run? Want to help with the IMC's other tech needs, including media production workstations, public access Internet terminals and networking?

Come to the IMC Web/Tech Meeting, 8 PM, Monday, June 7 at the IMC, 218 W. Main St., Downtown Urbana.

Everyone is invited and welcome.
On the agenda for this first meeting are two major items:

1. Revising the U-C IMC Website Appropriate Use Policy in order to make it relevant to current problems and issues of Spam, trolling and abusive posts.

This policy was written more than 2 years ago, and since that time the amount of traffic to the website has greatly increased, as has the quantity of problematic postings and comments. The website software has also changed, bringing new features that aren't taken into account in the current policy.

How can we make it easier for IMC volunteers to fair and democratically edit the website while making sure it remains both as open, accessible and useful as possible?

2. Figuring out how to take care of the tech needs of the IMC's working groups.

For the first two years of its existence, the U-C IMC had a tech group that met weekly to handle these issues. Once a basic infrastructure had been built, interest in the group waned, and working groups took on more tech duties themselves. However, the lack of coordinated tech support has meant that basic maintenace has not been consistent, and updates and upgrades are not performed regularly, if at all.

How can techies cooperate and coordinate with working groups to make sure basic tech needs are met? How do we make sure that the IMC's tech resources remain useable, useful and accessible to both members and visitors?

Like all IMC meetings, the IMC Web/Tech meeting is open to the public, and all persons are welcome to attend and participate.

Persons who are regular readers and users of this website are especially invited to attend. We will draft the best use policy and keep the website most useful when we have many voices participating in the decision making relevant to the website.

If you think things could be better, fairer, more democratic or more useful, then we need you to meet with other interested folks, face-to-face, for fruitful discussion.

IMC Web/Tech meets Monday, June 7, at 8 PM at the IMC, 218 W. Main St, Downtown Urbana. Future meetings will be held the first Monday of the month at 8 PM.
