Champaign, IL -- May 25th, 2004 -- Local comic creators Damian Duffy and Dann Tincher today announced that they are giving readers a chance to meet the faces behind the ink lines. The comic book writer and artist will be appearing on Saturday, June 5th, 2004 from 1- 5 pm at G-Mart Comic Books, located at 44 E Main St., Suite # 101, in downtown Champaign. The pair will be signing autographs, doing sketches, giving away free comics, and discussing sequential art as well as their current projects: the serialized graphic novel Whisp, and the comics, art, animation, and prose inspired by the city of Tristero, USA, presented on their website rehab25.net.
Collaborators for over two years, these two University of Illinois alumni have recently released the second chapter of their book Whisp, entitled “Opening Windows.” Although a small press title, the book has nonetheless garnered a response from comic book retailers nationwide. “We’ve been very gratified by the sales of the book thus far,” remarked Tincher. “It has been our hope to create a work of art that will appeal both to readers familiar with the comics medium, and to those just looking for a good story told in a new and interesting way.”
A medium long overlooked by Western audiences, or considered solely a form of children’s entertainment, comic books and graphic novels have recently come into their own. From the movie adaptations of famed comic book characters topping box office charts to the graphic novels breaking sales records in bookstores and at the newsstand, now is a time of exceptional expansion for comics.
Duffy, also a former staff writer for Buzz Magazine and currently a reviewer for Microfilm Magazine, sees this influx of comic book related material into popular culture as a unique opportunity for the art form: “I think now more than any other time, people are willing to see comics as capable of telling any sort of story. From superheroes, to manga, to books like Whisp, more adult oriented character drama, if it’s done well, people are interested. Being able to go to places like G-Mart and meet people who are just becoming familiar with the versatility of comics is amazing. We’re grateful for the opportunity.”
After the signing, the driving forces behind Whisp plan to host a comics chat at a nearby restaurant. The chat will be open to the public, and Duffy and Tincher plan to be raffling off several items, including a free beer. “[But] …just one,” says Duffy. “Unless we sell a lot of comics. We’re kind of poor.”
