The Israeli justice minister, a Holocaust survivor, sparked controversy yesterday when he compared the actions of the IDF to Nazi atrocities during the Second World War. |
"I saw on television an old woman picking through the rubble of her house in Rafah, looking for her medicine, and she reminded me of my grandmother who was expelled from her home during the Holocaust," Yosef Lapid was quoting as saying in cabinet yesterday.
Ariel Sharon, prime minister, called the remarks "Criminal and intolerable". Mr Lapid, who also said Israeli policies could lead to charges of war crimes. His grandmother died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. |
