Let's take a look and see what we "remember" from school...
Separation of Church and State???
There is no mention of "separation of church and state" within our constitution, or any associated documents. The phrase "separation of church and state" originated in a letter from President Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists, dated January 1, 1802. This was 11 years after the ten constitutional amendments commonly known as the "Bill of Rights" went into effect.
The President was responding to a rumor that the government may declare a particular denomination as the "national denomination". In using this phrase, the President was actually quoting a Baptist minister named Roger Williams, who said "When they have opened a gap in the hedge or wall of separation between the garden of the church and the wilderness of the world, God hath ever broke down the wall itself.....And that therefore if He will eer please to restore His garden and Paradise again, it must of necessity be walled in peculiarly unto Himself from the world...." According to Williams, the "wall of separation" was to protect the "garden of the church" from the "wilderness of the world". That "wall" was originally introduced as, and understood to be, a one-directional wall protecting the church from the government.
There has never been a separation of church and state, except that which was provided for within the first amendment. This amendment has ALWAYS been meant to keep the government out of the affairs of the church, and NEVER to mean the government should completely avoid any expression of faith, morals, values, or even religious content, in the workings of state. The founding fathers were affirming the Christian roots of our government, and our constitution. There were 55 delegates to the constitutional convention, and 50 of these publicly confessed their faith in Jesus Christ. The history of our roots which gave rise to the founding of our republic testify boldly to the Christian bedrock.
MAYFLOWER COMPACT (1620)
"We...the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign, lord King James, having undertaken for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith...solemnly and mutually in the presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together in a civil body politic..." Notice that "covenant" is a biblical term, that the government was by consent of the governed, and the Government was "under God". This charter became needed after the Charter for Virginia was made invalid, due to the Pilgrims being blown off course.
FUNDAMENTAL ORDERS OF CONNECTICUT (1638)
“.... and well knowing where a people are gathered together the word of God requires that to maintain the peace and union of such a people there should be an orderly and decent government established according to God...." This document provided for representative government with annual elections, proportionate taxation with equal representation, and had points in common with the government of ancient Israel.
MASSACHUSETTS BODY OF LIBERTIES, (1641)
"The free fruition of such liberties, immunities and privileges as humanity, civility and Christianity call for as due to every man in his place and proportion without impeachment and infringement hath ever been and ever will be the tranquility and stability of churches and commonwealths." This provided for protection of life, liberty, property, and reputation. Life, property, and reputation, come from the influence of the Ten Commandments, and were understood to begin with conscience and God given rights.
FRAME OF GOVERNMENT, PENNSYLVANIA, (1682)
to develop "...laws as shall best preserve true Christian and civil liberty in opposition to all unchristian licentious and unjust practices, whereby God may have His due, Caesar his due, and the people their due.." by William Penn. Note the influence of "render to Caesar" from the bible.
FIRST ACT OF COLONIAL PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNMENT, (1682)
"Whereas the glory of Almighty God and the good of mankind is the reason and end of government, and therefore, government itself is a venerable ordinance of God..."

EARLY UNIVERSITIES (Trained future leaders of US)
-Harvard motto: "For Christ and the Church"
-William and Mary charter: "that the Christian faith may be propagated"
-Yale 1701 charter: "for the liveral and religious education of suitable youth"
-Rutgers motto: "Son of Righteousness, Shine Upon the West also"
-Princeton motto: "Under God's Power She Flourishes"
There can be no doubt, that our founders were Christians, who believed our nation was founded under the providence of God, and under His divine leadership we should prosper. For most of two centuries, you could not hold public office (federal or state) until you made a public confession of faith in Jesus Christ. To those who would deny our Christian roots, it is impossible to separate our heritage from who we are. But to this end, our history books have been stripped of real history, and replaced with liberal minded fabrications. History speaks much too loudly for this to succeed, unless we just plain give up. |
