A grainy video of his killing was shown on an Arabic-language website.
His captors said they were avenging the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, new images of which are to be released on Wednesday.
The CIA is said to be checking claims that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a suspected top member of the Islamic militant network al-Qaeda, was involved in the killing of Mr Berg.
"It shows the true nature of the enemies of freedom," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
"They have no regard for the lives of innocent men, women and children. We will pursue those who are responsible and bring them to justice."
Jewish victim
For reasons not yet clear, Nick Berg was arrested by Iraqi police two months ago.
Berg's body was found on 8 May on a road near Baghdad
According to his family, he was held by them for 13 days without any contact with the outside world before being released without charge and handed over to the coalition authorities.
Mr Berg's father, Michael, said his son had been trying to come home.
"They caused his death indirectly by detaining him without any rights," said Michael Berg.
"Even after detaining him I think they at least had an obligation to get him safely out of the country."
The dead man's father added that his son, whose abductors talk on the video of the Islam being under threat, had been Jewish.
"If there was any doubt that they were going to kill him that probably clinched it, I'm guessing," he said.
New pictures
News of Mr Berg's killing came as American politicians negotiated with the Pentagon over the precise arrangements for a viewing of all the remaining photographs and video images of the abuse of prisoners by American troops.
CBS television is understood to be going ahead with the broadcast later on Wednesday of a video diary by a female American soldier who worked at two prison camps in Iraq, the BBC's Justin Webb reports from Washington.
The video does not show scenes of abuse but the soldier is said to talk flippantly of Iraqi prisoners dying.
She makes it clear she does not regard their safety as important.
Members of both houses of Congress are also due to have the opportunity to view more pictures of abuse in possession of the Pentagon on Wednesday.
Nick Berg's abductors said they had offered to exchange him for inmates at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison but the coalition authorities had, they said, refused. |

The tragic murder of Nick Berg has nothing to do with the alleged "abuse" of terrorist prisoners. This is a war. And, what is being called "abuse"...amounts to nothing when compared to what American POW's have endured at the hands of America's enemies over the years. No one actually seems to know exactly why Mr. Berg was there. He apparently was not there at the request of the United States Government, or any of its contractors. But, the real evil, which left leaning people willingly choose to overlook, is that he was murdered, period. The United States didn't murder him, and Bush didn't murder him...murderers killed him and your misplaced resentment towards the United States for his death reveals you as nothing more than a Bush hater, and a traitor to your Country in time of war. |

What this murder does prove once and for all, is that al Queda is operating inside of Iraq.
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi trained in Northern Iraq with the full knowledge of Hussein and his cronies. You want a connection between Bin Laden and Iraq, there it is.
It also proves that we are dealing with Monsters and that they need to be dealt with accordingly.
