IMCfest is this Saturday (All Ages!) and Wednesday (18+).
IMCfest 2003 was so fun that we decided to have another one and it's
two days this time. On Saturday, May 1st we'll have 2 stages at the
University YMCA with 5 bands, a short film, and a zine slam. On
Wednesday, May 5th we'll have 2 stages at the Canopy Club with 9 bands
and 2 films. The events are $3-$50 sliding scale so for a mere $6 you
can see 14 bands, 3 films, and a 'zine slam on 4 stages. Never a dull
moment with the IMC Shows Group.
We raised $1600 towards the Capital Campaign and the Shows Group at
the last IMCfest and we hope to do it again. When the IMC acquires a
new building of it's own, we will need funds to build our own shows
space so that C-U can once again have a permanent all ages non-smoking
volunteer operated independent music venue. 14 bands are donating
their performances to this event, let's make it worth their while by
packing the University YMCA on Saturday and the Canopy Club on
Wednesday!

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center,
in conjunction with The Canopy Club,
WEFT 90.1 FM, and the Hub,
is having a follow-up to its highly successful fundraiser last August. IMCFest 2004
will take place at the University YMCA on May Day from 7 PM until midnight and at the
Canopy Club on Cinco de Mayo from 6 PM until 2 AM. This festival will be a fundraiser for
the UCIMC--100% of the money collected at the door will go directly to the Independent Media Center.
Help the shows group get a new PA, book more bands, fix up our OWN concert space, and more.
IMCFest 2004 will be a two-night multimedia event featuring 15 bands and four independent films.
Music groups at the fest will range in styles from folk to rock to
punk. The May Day event is all-ages; the Cinco de Mayo event is 18+. See below
for a list confirmed bands and films.
May 1st and May 5th are days to celebrate independence and grassroots
struggle. May 1st is Labor Day celebrated by workers all over the
world. International Labor Day commemorates the struggle for the 8
hour day by workers in Chicago in 1886 and the Haymarket Martyrs who
were targetted by the government as part of that struggle. May 5th
(Cinco de Mayo) commemorates the victory of an outnumbered Mexican
peasant army over foreign invaders.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
We are still in the process of confirming bands for this event, so please check back here often!
So far we've confirmed...
"Lee has a beautiful, airy voice, and combined with her acoustic
guitar, she spins gold-threaded webs around listeners....This is the
kind of quality music that should be playing on the radio." - Holly
Rushakoff, The Octopus,Champaign, Illinois
Local female-fronted straight-up punk rock. Complete with mohawks.
A local old school pop-punk band. They have been accused of "fus[ing] up-tempo
melodies with loud, experimental riffs and vocal dynamics reminiscent of Kurt
Cobain and Dave Grohl." Very catchy.
Loud, high intensity rock drum and guitar duo. Featuring ex-Buzzards, ex-Empty
Orchestra, and ex-Goldsmith Jones. Did I say loud already?
Green Light Go
Local power pop foursome featuring IMCsta Jenny Stewart.
Water Between Continents
Instrumental indie rock. Only much, much better than you've heard it done before.
Chicago-based jangle pop. Wanamaker is nice enough to stop off at IMCFest from
their tour, so come see them! Featuring Janet Kim of Kim, and Brent Olds, ex-Poi
Dog Pondering and ex-Johnny Socko.
i:scintilla is Champaign's best local industrial band. Female-fronted, they put
the "dark" back in "darkwave."
Veteran local power pop band, unrelated to polyps. Check out their mp3s.
Nu Orbit Ensemble
Nu Orbit Ensemble features Tom Paynter (from Ear Doctor) on keyboard and flute,
Jason Finkelman on berimbau and percussion, Chad Dunn (G. Lee and Jet Blonde and many others),
and Jay Eychaner on synthesizer.
The Hags
The Hags are an all women a capella (plus drums) singing group with
funky attitude and fair shares of silliness and political
seriousness. Infinite fun. "Worms shit dirt but they don't eat
concrete." The Hags are exactly what the IMC is all about, independent
community-oriented radical music that you won't hear many other
places.
Joni Laurence sings, plays guitar and writes songs, not unlike lots of
other girls with guitars. So, what makes her stand out? The truth is,
Joni's music is everything you already love about acoustic music --
strong vocals, meaningful lyrics and memorable melodies. Joni has
worked hard to become a well known singer-songwriter throughout
central Illinois and up to Chicago. Her influences include the Indigo
Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith, and Paul
Simon.
A Philly-based singer/songwriter, Cynthia is touring with Wanamaker and is also nice
enough to stop and play for us. Her folk-rock sound has been described as "placid
delivery and appealing production [that] have lulled me into believing
Pennsylvania is a modern-day utopia with mood-lighting."
Rodeo Girl Collective
Band members describe themselves as rock "through a classic rock filter." Curious yet?
May 1
IMC Newsreal Cancun 2003
IndyMedia's documentation of the 2003 WTO protests in Cancun. 28 min.
May 5
The video tells the story of the 24 unarmed, ski-masked rebel leaders of the Zapatistas,
joined by thousands of indigenous, Mexican, and international supporters in their mission
to address members of the Mexican government to demand democracy, liberty, and
justice for the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The perfect way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo,
as the Zapatistas and others continue to struggle for true independence and peasant rights.
This movie will be shown at 6 PM. 70 min.
Land and Street
A collaboration between IMC-Italy, IMC-Argentina, and Vrije Keyser Televisie in
Amsterdam, this video tells the story of the Argentinian economic collapse and
how the people are creating autonomous organizations such as the piqueteros
and neighborhood assemblies to both solve their own problems and struggle
against neo-colonization by global capital. No Pasaran!!
This movie will be shown at 7:15 PM. 40 min.
Mission
Indymedia is a global network of collectively run media outlets for
the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of
truth. We are motivated by a love and inspiration for people who work
for a better world despite corporate media's distortions and
unwillingness to cover efforts to develop an egalitarian and
sustainable society.
The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots
organization committed to using media production and distribution as
tools for promoting social and economic justice in the
Urbana-Champaign area. We are dedicated to addressing issues that the
mainstream media neglects and we do not conceal our politics behind a
false objectivity. We will empower people to "become the media" by
providing democratic access to available technologies and information.
Capital Campaign
The UC-IMC's Capital Campaign to buy a building of its own,
establishing a permanent presence in our community, is in full
swing. The Capital
Campaign already has about $70,000 in the bank.
The UC-IMC is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. All donations to
the capital campaign are tax deductible as allowed by law. Those who
would like to make an
anonymous or one-time contribution to the IMC capital campaign can
send donations by mail to:
