Campus Greens at the University of Illinois will be hosting a lecture by legendary hip-hop artist, Chuck D at Foellinger Auditorium on April 9, 2004 at 7PM. Chuck D, co-founder of the rap group, Public Enemy, will speak to a large audience of campus and community members about issues such as police review, diversity, racial profiling, and progressive politics. His lecture is entitled "Rap, Race, Reality, and Technology."
Chuck D’s group, Public Enemy, released their first album, Yo Bum Rush the Show, in 1987. Since then, the group has released nine albums. Public Enemy’s music addresses weighty issues about race, rap, rage, reality, and inequality.
Chuck D has been invited to speak at UIUC as part of the Campus Green’s campaign for citizen police review boards in Champaign, Urbana, and on campus. “We are hoping that Chuck D’ s appearance will educate attendees about his life and music as well as examine the weighty topics of racial profiling and police misconduct which affect us in Champaign-Urbana,” said Dave Sacks, Campus Greens President.
Nearly thirty campus and community organizations have joined together to form the Coalition for Citizen Police Review (CPRB). CPRB’s goal is to encourage the Urbana and Champaign City councils to pass legislation that would create citizen boards to review complaints about the police. “Citizen review of police activities will provide a just system for area residents, a system in which making a complaint is less intimidating. The board will also protect police from fraudulent complaints and litigation costs,” said Jennifer Walling, Campus Greens Outreach Coordinator and UIUC law student.
Current Co-Sponsors include: Campus Greens at UIUC, Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort, Prairie Greens of East Central Illinois, U-C Hip-Hop, Black Law Students Association, Student American Civil Liberties Union, National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Visionaries Educating Youth and Adults, Coalition for Citizen Police Review, and Amnesty International.
Campus Greens is a registered student organization of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For more information see www.uiuc.edu/ro/greens For more information on Chuck D, visit http://www.kepplerassociates.com/speakers/chuckd.asp
