BRIT TZEDEK DEPLORES YASSIN ASSASSINATION
CHICAGO, March 23---Brit Tzedek v’Shalom, the Jewish
Alliance for Justice and Peace, deplores the
assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder and
spiritual leader of Hamas, on Monday. We recognize that
Israel has the same right and obligation that all
sovereign nations have to ensure the security of its
citizens and that under Yassin's leadership Hamas
terrorism has been responsible for the deaths of
hundreds and injury of thousands of Israelis.
Nevertheless, Yassin's assassination will have
consequences that are likely to diminish rather than
enhance Israel’s security.
We mourn the loss of Israeli and Palestinian lives
that will inevitably follow as a direct result of this
assassination. These deaths will be the latest in this
vicious cycle of violence and retaliation that has
come to dominate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Each death leads both sides further away from
achieving a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
Long term, the assassination of Yassin can only
accelerate the steady shift in popular support from
the more moderate Palestinian Authority to Hamas and
serve to recruit much larger numbers of Palestinian
youths eager to become martyrs. In light of Israel’s
announced intention to withdraw its army and evacuate
most settlements from the Gaza Strip, the
assassination may well have negative consequences for
Israel. The assassination of such a central leader
can only increase hatred of Israel and the U.S.
throughout the Islamic world, and could constitute a
danger not only for Israelis, but for Americans as
well.
