SEPARATE IS NOT EQUAL: The Fight for Gay Marriage
1pm, Saturday, April 3, 2004
Across the country a new civil rights movement has been born. From the Massachusetts court decision legalizing gay marriage to the city of San Francisco granting around 4,000 same sex couples marriage licenses, to protests in Iowa, Chicago, Oregon, New York and Chicago. At the same time there is a right-wing attack on the right to gay marriage, and politicians in both parties have tried to put a stop to gays and lesbians right to marry. KEEANGA-YAMMATTA TAYLOR argues that not only should gays and lesbians have the right to marry, we need to organize a struggle from below to win this right nation-wide.
This forum is part of the 2004 Midwest Socialist Conference at the University of Illinois–Chicago. Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted. 10am-8pm.
