The Vote in Spain Falls Mainly on Bush Current rating: 0
15 Mar 2004
Choosing a lesser of evils is no alternative, in fact, at this point in history it will not even slow down America's relentless march toward perdition. We are on the wrong road, both politically and morally; it is time to make an about face and change direction. But first, the spell must be broken.
Imagine the following scenario:

An opposition party candidate wins the election by challenging Bush on the war in Iraq. Voters turned out in large numbers to defeat the ruling party. At the polls, they shout to the incumbent "Liar!" and "Get our troops out of Iraq!". Overall, the results are a clear repudiation of the Bush Administration.

Does this sound too good to be true? Well, it is not. In fact it already happened, except it did not take place in these United States. Yesterday, Spain's Socialist party gained an upset victory over the conservative Popular Party of Prime Minister Jose Maria Anzar, a close ally of George Bush. I find it interesting that Spanish politicians are brave enough to articulate strong objections to the policies and practices emanating from the Bush regime, while here in this country we are busy debating the moral implications of gay marriage.

It may be that Spanish voters cannot nullify the Bush Doctrine of Total War, but they can rebuke it by removing a government that supported Bush's illegal war on Iraq. How much more could we in America accomplish if given the opportunity? But will we be given that opportunity? If the best that the Democrats can come up with is the vapid, vision-less mantra of "Anybody But Bush" (a curiously desperate refrain not so different from George Bush's famous remark that all who were not with him, were "with the terrorists") then it appears we will not have much of an electoral option for meaningful change. Choosing a lesser of evils is no alternative, in fact, at this point in history it will not even slow down America's relentless march toward perdition. We are on the wrong road, both politically and morally; it is time to make an about face and change direction. But first, the spell must be broken. A complete withdrawl from Afghanistan and Iraq would be a good place to start.

When the new Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Zapatero, was accused during the campaign of not having principles or convictions he responded by giving this example: "My first priciple [is]: Thou shalt not kill. That's why I oppose an unjust war. My second principle: Thou shalt not lie..." One can only wish someone at the Democratic Leadership Council will pick up the phone and invite Mr. Zapatero to come and coach our own opposition party candidate in the fine art of making a moral case against the theft, deceits, and murders that have been perpetrated by the Bush Regime and carried out under color of law.
