During March 10-11th people around the world will send e-mails, faxes or phone Tabacal Sugar Mill Company offices asking them to recognize Ava Guarani indigenous people territory. |

On 16th September 2003, an Ava Guarani community, in Argentina´s Salta Province, was brutally displaced from their ancestral territory, known as ¨La Loma¨. The police forced people to gather together, aiming at their heads, using batons and discharging firearms into the air without hesitation, even
against pregnant women, children and old people.
Tabacal sugar mill, property of Seaboard Corporation has been threatening local people of losing their jobs, if they support ava guarani land claims, as the company is the main employer in the region.
Ava guarani people has lost 5.000 ha of their ancestral territory, where their culture and history lie in ancestral native woods in the middle of the Yungas forest. Almost 150 ava guarani families live in 2 ha of floody lands whereas the Tabacal sugar mill uses 1.000.000 ha to produce sugar on indigenous ancestral territories.
¨What the hell are you and your little lawyer doing?. You´ll finish the same as on september. If you and the community keep bothering us with the land claim of La Loma, both your sons and grandsons will have no jobs¨. Said Mr Roberto Mc Loughilin, company´s Staff Chief to one of the community members.
They made a 266 kilometre march to Salta´s capital city, to claim their land rights and ask provincial governor for justice. Without answers they traveled a further 1,508 kilmetres to Buenos Aires City to meet national government.
Now they are fighting to return to their territory.
