Arafat throws tantrum at Fatah conclave
Lobs mike at aide, who parries with pen.
Maariv News Service
PA Chairman Yasser Arafat is reported to have outdone his reputation for fits of anger when yesterday (Thursday) he threw a microphone at an aide at a meetinf of his Fatah movement's Revolutionary Committee in Ramallah.
Arafat's security advisor, General Nasser Youssef, asked pointedly what efficiency Palestinian forces could achieve without thorough reforms. Arafat responded by hurling the microphone at Youssef, who threw a pen at the chairman. Both men also exchanged curses and left the hall in a huff.
The revolutionary Committee was convened for the first time in three years -- that is, since the start of the present intifada in the face of growing demands from the rank-and -file to hold elections for a full Fatah convrention, which has not been held since 1989. There are increasing charges within the movement that the old leadership is corrupt and out of touch, as well as sharp disagreements as to strategy toward Israel and anxieties that Fatah may lose its dominant position to the Islamic movements.
