Frank Bang's Secret Stash at Cowboy Monkey
Friday, February 20, 2004
He can touch your soul. He can rock you to your roots. When you hear his music, you will know.
Frank Bang is the latest name on that short list of young, Chicago native, blues children to have played their way to the top of the tough, grudging, traditional urban blues culture.
Frank Bang is devoted to the music of his youth. His heart is pure rock and roll, but his soul screams the blues. Like Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield before him, it was the combination of raw talent, hard work and devotion that earned him respect, and a following, among blues loyalists. Blues guitar master Buddy Guy chose Frank to play blues guitar alongside him on his national and world tours. When you hear him play you will understand why.
For Frank, being on the road with Buddy Guy has been an advanced education in the blues, especially in the fields of guitar mastery and showmanship. The experience has not only honed his ability with traditional material to that of a true journeyman, it has strengthened his contemporary rock guitar presence as well. On the road, he has jammed with some of Rock and Roll's great legends including Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Carlos Santana, Robert Plant, Jimmy Vaughan, John Mayer, Richie Sambori and Zakk Wylde, to name a few. He has performed on the Tonight Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and numerous European and American television specials, including a documentary on BRAVO and Jules Holland “Live”, for the BBC.
Frank was born on Chicago’s West Side, a tough part of the city where neighborhood clubs resonated nightly with live blues. He was surrounded by it, but in some very important ways he kept his distance.
A teenager growing up in a working-class family, his first musical inspiration came from classic and contemporary guitar bands that frequented the airwaves, or got passed around on vinyl or cassette. He was passionate about his music and his music was rock, and it suited him just fine … until the rocker tuned twenty-one and the doors to Chicago's teeming and diverse nightlife swung open.
Soon he was living with the blues, working days as well as nights at Chicago’s most world-renowned blues club, Buddy Guy’s Legends. Hired to work the door, Frank showed up the first day with his guitar. “It was like my own private blues university,” he says of the years spent working his way up the ranks. He was soaking up musical genius and after-hours wisdom from local blues greats like Junior Wells, Otis Rush and Lonnie Brooks, as well as the world's most prominent touring acts. It was not long before Frank was being invited to sit in with the club's top performers.
A vote of confidence, and perhaps the first omen of events to follow, came from Buddy Guy when he put Frank and his funky, horn-driven blues-rock project, The Buzz, in charge of hosting Legend’s famous Monday Night Jam. The Buzz continued to develop their fan base both in and around the Midwest. Later touring the country extensively, The Buzz sold nearly 10,000 independent discs nationwide. A Chicago favorite, The Buzz is also featured on play lists from coast to coast, with more than half a dozen songs having received significant radio airplay. After a thorough evaluation from the wings, Buddy approached him and took him around the world to play the blues. The spotlight has really heated up for Frank Bang.
A strong presence in the studio or on the stage, Frank Bang's personal brand of hard-wired, urban blues-rock is original, affable and energetic. It strikes an especially responsive chord among young adult audiences, and beacons adventurous souls from all walks of life. While his free-form sets may take off to bold new places in search of music without boundaries, Frank never deviates from his intention to rock you to your roots. When you hear his music, you will know.
