Senator John Kerry is currently leading Bush in several polls. |
Bush's approval ratings have been falling steadily since 9/11, save for two temporary spikes at the start of the Iraq invasion and the capture of Saddam Hussein. Meanwhile, his disapproval ratings have been rising sharply in recent months, and are now at their highest level ever of 48% following David Kay's congressional testimony that pre-war WMD intelligence was "almost all wrong".
In the time since Kerry has taken front-runner status among Democratic presidential hopefuls, he has also overtaken Bush in a head-to-head matchup. In a recent USA Today / CNN / Gallup poll, Kerry is leading Bush 53% to 46%. Edwards is also leading Bush.
The conventional wisdom that it will be an uphill struggle to beat Bush needs to be revised. The race is currently extremely close, and only very good news from Iraq or elsewhere in the WOT seems likely to significantly alter that. |
