Local Bands to Perform for Nonprofit Student Environmental Benefit Concert
(Urbana) Four local bands will perform on February 12th at the Canopy Club during a benefit concert for three local environmental organizations. Mike Ingram, Sick Day, the Kate Hathaway Band, and Green Mountain Grass are all slated to apply their talents to a good cause: protecting the environment. The concert begins at 9:00 pm.
Several months ago, local musician Guido Esteves approached the Illinois Student Environmental Network with the proposal to coordinate a benefit concert for local environmental organizations. Esteves proceeded to handle all the rock ‘n roll work, and ISEN took charge of the promotion. In all, four local bands stepped up to contribute their talents to the cause; Mike Ingram, Sick Day, the Kate Hathaway Band, and Green Mountain Grass all volunteered to pluck, strum, sing, rock, and roll in defense of the environment. ISEN also invited two University of Illinois student organizations to share the proceeds from the event. As a result, the Rainforest Action Group (RAG) and the Red Bison Prairie Restoration group, both came on board for the benefit.
“We wanted to involve the student groups so they could learn to put on events like these for themselves in the future,” said Andy Borbely, one of ISEN’s campus organizers. “This event is going to support ISEN’s environmental programs across Illinois, as well as benefit some great issues.” Borbely adds, “Just by showing up to listen to some great music, people are supporting the work of these student groups that do everything from protecting the rainforest to restoring local prairies. It’s really a great opportunity.”
Esteves says, “My band and I saw this as a great chance to make a difference on environmental issues that are important to us. All of the musicians involved in this event really have their hearts in the right place.” Chris Lempa of ISEN adds, “I’m looking forward to a great time. The bands we booked are all office favorites of ours; we had no idea THEY appreciated OUR work as much as they do!”
