A Vote for Sharpton is a Vote for the Future
Umar ben-Ivan Lee
This week voters in several states will go to the polls and decide who should be the next President of these United States. Many are eagerly looking forward to the chance to cast their ballots, others feel that their vote will not make a difference and still others have listened to the media and in their mind Sen. John Kerry is the nominee.
I believe that in this dark hour of American history with the presidency currently held by an incompetent man and an evil-doer that all should be part of the decision making process as to who should replace George W. Bush.
For those who believe that Sen. Kerry will win no matter what let us also remember that only a few short weeks ago these same political pundits had ordained Howard Dean as the nominee of the party. The only wasted vote is a vote that is not cast and those who go to vote should vote for who they feel represents their beliefs and not who they feel is the best bet or a sure thing. Let us keep in mind that while there will be only one nominee of the party; the rest will be losers, so no one candidate should be labeled as a “fringe candidate”. We should also keep in mind that for those who will see the race all the way through, such as the Rev. Al Sharpton, the delegates won by Sharpton will have leverage at the Democratic Convention, unlike those who quickly drop-out after it is apparent that they will not win the nomination.
Voters and citizens of conscious should go to the polls this week and every other week and vote for those who speak to their interests. After examining the interests and needs of America and viewing the field of candidates it becomes obvious that there is only one candidate in the race who is consistently on the side of the people and that is Rev. Al Sharpton.
Furthermore, not only is Rev. Sharpton on the side of the people today as he wants your vote he has been on the side of the people all of his life as he has fought for the poor, downtrodden, abused and neglected his entire life. Sharpton has been a soldier for justice his whole life not just when it is convenient. He has been in jail cells across this land and even in the jails of Puerto Rico advocating on behalf of justice and looking out for the “least of these” in our society.
He is the only candidate to speak to the constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to vote as millions of Americans are being disenfranchised of their right to vote and both the Democratic and Republican Party have sat by idly and not done a thing to protect the right to vote.
Al Sharpton is the only candidate who has came out in support of a national dialouge on race, reparations and shifting the balance of power in our society and taking the “whites only” sign off of the positions of power.
The Rev. Sharpton has also called for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing health care to all citizens, ending the occupation of Iraq, a federal jobs program that would employ millions re-building the infrastructure of America.
While others may have a good conversation when they need your vote. Remember that Sharpton will fight for you all the way to the convention no matter what and at a bare minimum you will have a voice at the convention if Sharpton is gets the needed delegates.
If Al Sharpton does not have the delegates that he needs then who will speak up against voter intimidation, disenfranchisement, the insane war on drugs and mandatory minimum sentencing, the need for DC statehood and the question of race in America?
If not Sharpton than who will stand up to the corruption within the Democratic Party and to those who wish to abandon many of the things that made the party great in the past?
When you go to the ballot box vote for the future and vote Sharpton and give the people of this land a fighting chance. |
