Champaign Independent Media Center on Friday, August 17th

NYC-based spoken word sensation Alix Olson will be performing on Friday evening, August 17th at the Independent Media Center, 218 W. Main Street, Urbana.

Alix Olson bridges the gap between generations of feminists. Her voice is always honest, always political. She inspires and ignites."
--Patricia Ireland N.O.W.

Olson will be promoting her debut CD Built Like That, which features musical guests Catie Curtis and Pamela Means. (Available from CDbaby.com) Having recently appeared on the cover of Ms Magazine (Dec.2000/January 01), Olson has developed a strong national fan base. She got her start as
a member of the 1998 Nuyorican Poets Cafe National Slam Championship Team. Since that time, Olson has been thrilling national and international audiences at colleges, universities, theatres, clubs and events such as Portugal's 1999 FalaDura Poetry Festival and Holland's 2000 International Poetry Festival.

After a recent joint appearance in Berkeley, author/activist Howard Zinn extolled, "Alix brought me to my feet. She is an ingenious poet, a brilliant performer, a funny person, and a serious thinker. She is, quite simply, extraordinary."

Olson has been featured on the Oxygen Network, CNN, PBS's In the Life and WXPN's World Cafe. Her work is published in Burnin' Down The House, Poems from the 1998 Nuyorican Poets Cafe National Slam Championship Team (Soft Skull Press) as well as numerous anthologies. Olson is the co-editor of
the upcoming queer slam poetry anthology, Bullets and Butterflies.

The CD release party for Built Like That was held June 6 at The Bitter End in New York City. Some 300 people (SRO) were jammed inside while another 75 waited outside. This event also launched Alix's summer long cross-country tour.

"Alix Olson is a red-hot, fire-bellied, feminismo-spewin' volcano. Plus she rhymes. Listen to her now."
- Alison Bechdel, creator,"Dykes to Watch Out For"
